Saxophone Saturday Sample Schedule
8:00 AM Registration
9:00 AM Classical Master Class/Clinic
Leader: Guest classical saxophonist or host school’s saxophone teacher.
Topics: Styles, tone conception, technical studies, vibrato, altissimo,
warm-up and practice techniques, etc. (May include performance by the
student participants, for which an accompanist should be available).
10:30 AM Big Band Saxophone Section
Leader: Guest jazz saxophonist or school’s jazz band director.
Topics: With a rhythm section in place, saxophone participants will be
rotated in and out of a traditional 5-piece Big Band saxophone section
and be taught the correct sound, styles, rhythms and articulations, etc.
(Rhythm section: piano, bass, drums; can be a student group from the host
school’s jazz band.)
12:00 NOON Break for Lunch
1:30 PM Chamber Music Master Class
Leader: New Century Saxophone Quartet.
Topics: NCSQ will work with pre-selected saxophone groups on pitch concept,
balance, rehearsal techniques, leadership roles in chamber music, etc.
3:00 PM Jazz Workshop
Leader: Guest jazz saxophonist or host school’s saxophone teacher.
Topics: Jazz improvisation, styles of jazz, different jazz oriented techniques,
etc. (May include student performances with a jazz rhythm section from
the host school.)
4:30 PM Large Saxophone Ensemble
Leader: Host school’s saxophone teacher, guest classical saxophonist,
or Stephen Pollock of the New Century Saxophone Quartet.
An ensemble of all the participants who brought a saxophone. The group
will learn a couple of pieces to perform to open the Saxophone Saturday
Concert.
5:30 PM Break for Dinner
7:30 PM Saxophone Saturday Concert (open to the public)
